IMPORTANT INFORMATION: If you plan to put a web site on the Internet, whether or not you decide to use The Site Guy's services, you should read these important notes.  The information provided here may point out many issues that you either need to consider, or be informed about prior to, during, and after the construction of your web site.

Development Tools

Our web sites are created with many different development tools.  These tools are mainly the various software programs that we use to create the features needed in a particular web site project.  Software tools are things such as the html, image, sound, video, and e-commerce editors.   Along with the software tools needed to complete any project, there are several hardware tools as well.  Such tools include computers, scanners, printers, digital cameras, microphones, mixers, etc.  As in many other areas of life our tools, and our knowledge of their uses, help to shape what we can do with them.  In addition, it takes many countless hours of uncompensated devotion to learn how to use these tools properly and effectively.  Thus, we believe that our prices are a more-than-fair representation of the value of our work and services.  We are modestly positioned between the most inexpensive and expensive web site developers you will find.  Yet, our work is of very high quality and value.

Editors

At this time, we use a single well-known html editor/web site development package to create our client's sites.  That application is Microsoft's FrontPage 2000.  FrontPage has a number of added features and benefits, which come into play via the FrontPage Server Extensions that reside on the ISP's (Internet Service Provider's) server.  These extensions allow us to add features such as page hit counters, forms, marquees, ad banners, search forms, bulletin boards, guest pages, threaded discussion groups, sounds, and much more.  For more on FrontPage created sites, click here.

In the very near future, we will be migrating over the the new Microsoft Web Authoring programs, just released in 2007.

More About FrontPage

In order to use the special features FrontPage offers, the server your site is hosted on MUST have the FrontPage server extensions installed.  Further, the extensions must be properly configured.  If not, these features WILL NOT function.  Be aware, that if you move or take your site files to another location or ISP, the server must have these extensions installed and properly configured or parts of your web site will not function or display properly.

This does not mean that we cannot design a site for you if you are NOT on a server running the FrontPage Server Extensions.   Rather, it means that these special features will not be available to you via FrontPage.  However, there are other methods for placing such features on your pages, so do not despair.  FrontPage does allow us to build your site faster, with more functionality, and allows us to upload any changes directly to the server.  However, we have another very powerful editor that we use as well... click here to learn more about our "other" editor.

Search Engines

In the past, we included search engine submission as a basic, but free, part of our service.  However, the guidelines under which search engine submissions are accepted have changed far too rapidly, and are too varied to allow us to perform this service efficiently.  For that reason, we will no longer be performing  search engine submission as a part of our services.

However, there are many businesses popping up everywhere that do exactly that... submit your site to all the best search engines.  The following are some links you can follow to get your site submitted by professional submission services.  We are in no way affiliated in these services, nor do we bear any responsibility for, or as a result of, their actions or lack thereof.  They are supplied merely as a convenience to our clients, and as a starting point for their search for a qualified and professional submission service.  We strongly encourage you to do your own research on the internet to investigate what services are available to you before entering into any agreement with such services.

Photos & Scanning

Customer-supplied photos, artwork, or other graphics, which are already in file form, may be submitted via a floppy disk in U.S. Mail, or via attachment to our e-mail addresses (the latter being the quickest and easiest).  If you need us to scan media for you, please call or send an e-mail requesting our mailing address.   Each item we scan for you will add an additional cost of $5.00 to your site's cost.  Be sure to include a self-addressed, postage paid mailing envelope that is suitable for properly protecting any photos, graphics, etc., that you are sending to us.   We cannot, and will not, be responsible for damage to any articles you send us which are not properly protected, and will not be responsible for items lost in the mail, or otherwise mishandled by the U.S. Post Office or other qualified carrier.   For this reason, it is strongly recommended that you provide us with copies of any valuable photos, graphics, etc., rather than the originals.

How Keywords Help

Early on in the site building process, you should start thinking about a list of keywords for your web site.  Eventually, these keywords can be embedded into your web pages, allowing the search engines that recognize keywords to use them as matches for those searching the internet for sites like yours.

Before you approve your site for submission to the search engines, you need to give very careful consideration to choosing keywords that could be associated with your business, its products, etc., by your prospective customers.  And, know too, that each search engine that used keywords, may use them differently.

It is also important to think about your business from the viewpoint of an existing customer, client, or lateral user of your services, because those seeking you through search engines will not always know the proper terms and names to refer to you by.  Therefore, it is important to include both proper names and references, along with more informal ones commonly used by clients and customers.

Further, you can choose a separate set of keywords for each page in your site, so that they best represent the information being presented on each page.  Once you have chosen your keywords, you may send them to us via email, along with any instructions for which sets go with certain pages, so we can embedded them into your web pages.  Or, you can use a search engine submission service for this purpose.  The latter is highly recommended, as we do not provide any submitting services.

Once your site is completed, and uploaded to the host server (with keywords included), your site is ready for submission to the search engines.  Then, after the submission process and necessary waiting period, each search engine that received your site's submission "spiders", or looks through, your site.

All those keywords you selected are now listed with the search engines that recognize and use them as part of their organizational scheme.  When they do, it is in this way that people who type matches to your keywords into their search engines, may find your site.  This, of course, provided that your site happens to be clicked on by the searcher.

Additionally, you need to know that not all search engines use keywords in the listing of a site.   Some allow the submission of several, while others may only allow a few, or none at all.  Be aware that the criteria for submission information varies from one search engine to another.
